Join the Conscious Ageing Circle

Because nobody tells you what this bit is actually like, do they?

Your body is probably changing; you might be scared of ending up alone - and you definitely don't want to be a burden in your older age.

It's possible you've searched for 'how to stay independent as you age', in the wee small hours. And you'll likely have caught yourself in the mirror and felt a jolt of surprise as you realise you don't look how you feel inside. Gulp.

You might have wondered how many friends you have left who actually 'get' you (and it's not that many, certainly not in your neighbourhood).

And here's the thing that no-one tells you: everyone else is feeling like this too. But we're not mentioning it to anyone, rather keeping it to ourselves. Pretending the knees don't hurt; pretending we're not terrified of ending up in a care home; and pretending we have a plan on how to stay independent forever.

What if we were more honest?

What if we could admit that our energy (and memory) often goes awol; that ageing IS actually happening to us too, even though we never thought it would; and that we have questions that concern us in the wee small hours, things like:

  1. What if I end up alone?

  2. How will I cope if my partner dies first?

  3. What if I become invisible to everyone who matters?

  4. How do I ask for help without it feeling awkward?

  5. What if I can't manage on my own anymore?

These aren't small worries. They are the big, alarming questions of this stage of life. And they deserve a space to be acknowledged, to speak of them and have them witnessed.

What the Conscious Ageing Circle is:

❤️ A monthly gathering on Zoom, and an ongoing WhatsApp group, where women like you—women who are done with the surface-level chat—come together to talk about what's really going on.

❤️ We talk about bodies. Not in some abstract, spiritual "honour your body" way, (although that may happen), but in a real, practical, sometimes angry way. The aches. The losses. The adaptations. And how to live in a body that keeps changing, whether it's slowly or abruptly.

❤️ We'll talk about connection and loneliness. How to build the relationships that sustain us. How to reach out without seeming desperate. How to create community when the world now seems designed to isolate us.

❤️ We'll talk about the burden question. This question is one that haunts many. How to stay independent without becoming isolated. How to accept help without losing dignity. How to plan for dependency without giving up on living fully now.

This isn't a support group where we sit around feeling sorry for ourselves! Rather, we will be talking about whatever comes up that wants to make itself known.

❤️ It's a space where we can be real; where we find out we're not the only one feeling this way; where we may strategise and plan; and where we discover that together we're actually more resourceful than we realised.

Who am I?

I was originally trained by Louise L Hay herself, back in 1990, and since then have always been working in the mind-body-spirit field, in a variety of ways.

But I was just devastated when my husband Philip died in 2011 – my greatest fear had come true, I was on my own, and childless, at age 54.  However, little did I know that 3 years on I would have published the best-selling book Gifted By Grief. How on earth could I be gifted by this terrible loss? And yet I was, and it led to me founding an end of life planning not-for-profit company, which I ran for 8 years.

Now, I'm married again, and we are building a house together. Ian is a widower, and we both feel just delighted to have had a second chance at love.

Currently, I write a newsletter on Substack called Embracing Ageing, and help women 55+ to age with confidence, courage and clarity, so they can fully embrace and enjoy this later stage of life.
